New artwork from Aquaman showcases early designs for Jason Momoa’s Arthur Curry and Amber Heard’s Mera.
Jason Momoa’s Aquaman blew away fans and critics its inspired narrative, exciting performances and splendid visuals. To reach such great heights, Aquaman had to go through a variety of changes and reworks to get the best possible version on screen. The same went for the concept art for Aquaman, which saw stars Jason Momoa and Amber Heard rocking two drastically different looks.
The concept art in question comes from Aaron Sims Creative, a studio commissioned to work on early designs for the characters of Jason Momoa and Amber Heard. You can check out the unused concept art from Aquaman that shows off different, more comic-inspireds look for Jason Momoa and Amber Heard below.
As you can see, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman isn’t rocking his long, iconic hair. Instead, Aquaman sports the classic short hair found in the comics. Jason Momoa still has a small beard albeit it doesn’t hold a candle to the long one seen in the film. Meanwhile, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman suit is similar to the iteration seen in the final film, though its colors are certainly more muted. As for Amber Heard’s Mera, the biggest change is the headpiece. In the film, Amber Heard’s headpiece is more regal and silver based, as opposed to the gold one seen above. In addition, Amber Heard’s Mera suit is a strict green and doesn’t have the streaks of gold seen above.
Overall, these concept designs for Aquaman seem like the perfect starting point for Jason Momoa and Amber Heard’s characters. They aren’t too different than the final visuals we saw in the film, and the changes that were made are certainly for the better. It would be a true travesty to remove Jason Momoa’s iconic hair, so we’re glad the creative powers that be didn’t fight him on that.
