Arsenal are already making plans to sign a ‘high quality’ left-back this summer, the Athletic claim.
Arsenal are seeking cover for Kieran Tierney, and did look around for options in January.
However, the Gunners were unable to find a suitable target and decided that they had enough cover in their squad not to consider a short-term option.
The Athletic say that Ryan Bertrand and Patrick van Aanholt, therefore, were never serious options.
Arsenal are instead looking at signing a ‘high quality’ youngster, who can fill in for Tierney when needed.
Mikel Arteta’s side apparently feel that they would benefit more from bringing in a player who they can develop, rather than an experienced campaigner along the lines of Bertrand or Van Aanholt.
That could be a smart move, as Arsenal will be reluctant to bring in another ageing star.
The North London side have shown that they are not afraid to sign players over the age of 30, but it means that they have very little re-sale value.
If Arsenal do sign a youngster instead they will, at least, have a chance to make profit – and the competition may even drive Tierney to perform to an even higher standard than he currently is.
