Speaking on behalf of the army, Onyema Nwachukwu claimed that he had “incited members of the public and solicited sympathy for the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).”

The army’s full statement can be found at the link provided below.

The arrest of ChiwETALU Agu by the police occurred when they were soliciting support for the proscribed IPOB movement.

During his public incitement and solicitation of support for the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nigerian Army (NA) troops arrested one Chiwetalu Agu (IPOB). Chiwetalu Agu was arrested for urging the public to join the prohibited organisation while dressed in a well-known outfit of the outlawed group. Despite his attempts to put up some resistance when forces tried to apprehend him, he was neither brutalized or attacked.

There are no inherent rights granted to any citizen of the country under the Nigerian constitution, yet it is a violation for anybody or any group to encourage the public to mayhem or law and order breakdowns, as established therein. Hence it is important to stress that while exercising these liberties, they must be done within legal limits and with due consideration for peace and national security.

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are still prohibited, for the sake of clarity and emphasis on that point. It is therefore considered a flagrant challenge to the constitutionality of Nigeria’s Federal Republic to witness any individual or group presenting and furthering its own cause or activities. Worse, given the current security situation in the region and the upcoming GOLDEN DAWN exercise, his actions could be interpreted as an implicit endorsement and support for the banned organisation. The group’s actions have recently taken on a violent tone, as we’ve all seen.

Chinwetalu Agu has shown an uncharitable inclination to undermine regional peace and security, hence he is being held for questioning. Once again, it should be noted that the claim that he was brutalized is untrue and should be ignored.

It is essential to reiterate that national interest above any local consideration, even if the NA does not allow IPOB and its sponsors to hold the region hostage and allow the security situation to worsen in the region There are consequences for those who stoke the flames of violence, whether it’s an individual or a whole group. Currently, the Exercises are on track to successfully eradicate criminal activity from the region.

South East residents who value peace and uphold the law are urged to carry on as usual, as efforts are under way to apprehend those responsible for recent acts of violence. They’re also advised to keep supporting the security forces in their efforts to bring peace and normalcy back to the region.
