Singing and Acting Career
Paris, France-native Claudine Georgette Longet was born on the 29th of January 1942. Eventually, in her late teens, she moved to Las Vegas and began working at the Folies Bergere as a dancer. Longet married Andy Williams in December 1961, and the couple had three children together. They divorced in 1975 after they split in 1969.
Longet had a successful singing career as a member of her husband’s variety show; even after their divorce, the two continued to perform together. Between 1967 and 1972, she released several albums, including The Look of Love, Colours, and We’ve Only Just Begun, and charted several singles in the adult contemporary genre in the United States. “Wanderlove” was a big hit in Singapore thanks to Longet’s popularity in Asian markets. She turned her fame as a singer into a successful acting career, appearing in such shows as McHale’s Navy and Blake Edwards’ 1968 film The Party, both starring Peter Sellers.
Charged With Manslaughter of Her Boyfriend
After their breakup, Longet began dating world-champion skier Vladimir “Spider” Sabich, whom he met through mutual friend. Despite the rumors that their relationship had become increasingly tumultuous, Longet and her children moved into his Aspen, Colorado home.
When Sabich’s body was discovered on March 21, 1976, Longet admitted that he had shot him with the pistol he was carrying at the time. He said it was an accident as he showed her how to handle the firearm. She later said. Finally, she was charged with negligent manslaughter.
When Longet’s ex-husband William Williams appeared in court in support of her, the case became an international media sensation and sparked a strong reaction from Aspen residents and tourists alike. Longet was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide but was found not guilty of felony manslaughter. As punishment, Longet was locked up for 30 days.
Away from the Media’s Eyes
Longet is being sued for $780,000 by Sabich’s family. Out of court, it was agreed that she would not discuss or write about her time with Sabich. Shortly after the trial ended, Longet began dating her married co-attorney Ron Austin, with whom she eventually got married. Longet and his family have made Aspen their home, and he has chosen to keep a low profile.
