During his Thanksgiving Day address yesterday, November 26th, Donald Trump started trending on Twitter, but for what, to him, are all the wrong reasons—Diaper Don.
Joe Biden got his fair share of memes for his Thanksgiving Day address mishap, and Donal Trump’s meme coverage wasn’t any different.
The name trended worldwide over Twitter, and continues to do so, after MediasTouch first tweeted an image of Donald Trump sitting at his desk for the address.
MediasTouch is a political action committee that describes its goal as “to stop the re-election of Donald Trump.” The group is run by three brothers and the group has over 500,000 followers on Twitter.
Viewers noticed that the desk Donald Trump used for the address appeared smaller than usual, while the padding around the president’s trousers looked more voluminous, according to some Twitter users.
The tweet quickly gained a lot of attention and before anyone knew it, ‘Diaper Don’ was trending.
Trump’s reaction to Diaper Don trend
Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump was less than happy with the Diaper Don trend, and tweeted his disapproval.
“Twitter is sending out totally false ‘trends’ that have absolutely nothing to do with what is really trending in the world. They make it up, and only negative ‘stuff’. Same thing will happen to Twitter as is happening to @FoxNews daytime. Also, big Conservative discrimination!”
He then called for the removal of Section 230 in the next tweet. Section 230 is an internet legislation which protects publishers of third party content – essentially most social media platforms.
Where does the meme come from?
Although Diaper Don is still going strong on Twitter trends, it’s not the first time the meme is getting online attention.
Previously however, the name referred to the President’s son, Donald Trump Jr. This came up after a book titled Born Trump by Vanity Fair reporter Emily Fox alleged Trump Jr. had earned the nickname in college. It allegedly originated from his drunken behaviour and penchant for bed-wetting while intoxicated, according to the book.
However, a spokesperson for Trump Jr. denied the claims to People, saying: “Both of these ‘claims’ are simply false. Don, who is now 40 years old, would be the first to admit that he enjoyed college, that said, both of these stories just aren’t true.”
Twitter’s reactions to the Diaper Don trend
With the name trending on Twitter for so long, it’s not surprising that it got a lot of reactions.
Many people were just shocked at how big the trend was:
