Who is Pookie Loc? Let’s get the Jeezy Gucci Mane rap battle explained and address the meme Gucci shared on social media. What does it mean?
The hip-hop genre has seen a number of feuds since its inception, from clashes between Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj to Machine Gun Kelly and Eminem.
Drake fans will be well aware of just how many he has had too…
Anyway, the long-standing beef between Jeezy and Gucci Mane has been somewhat resurrected in the form of a Verzuz battle.
The event recently took place in Atlanta strip club Magic City and the two went head-to-head after having clashed for at least 15 years.
Across the timeline of their feud, diss tracks have been released and fights have ensued. The reason behind it all?
Well, the pair had disagreements regarding the rights of the 2005 Gucci Mane single ‘Icy’ featuring Young Jeezy and Boo. Then came the death of Pookie Loc, but who exactly was he?
Who is Pookie Loc?
- Pookie Loc – real name Henry Lee Clark III – was a rapper and member of Jeezy’s crew. He was shot dead on May 10th, 2005 and Gucci Mane was accused of killing him. Pookie was 27 years old.
Heavy highlights that Gucci was involved in an altercation with four men inside the home of a friend on this date. One of the men was Pookie and Gucci told investigators that they barged into the apartment and began assaulting people inside.
This led to gunfire and Pookie died, later to be found in a wooded area near Columbia Middle School.
Gucci then turned himself in, admitting to shooting the group of men but adding that his actions were in self-defense.
The charges against Gucci were later dropped by prosecutors in 2006 due to insufficient evidence.
Gucci Mane meme explained
Ahead of Jeezy and Gucci’s Verzuz rap battle, memes surfaced on social media, with fans offering tongue-in-cheek speculation regarding what the rapper’s may bring up.
One meme shows a man jumping at another in a courtroom with the caption reading: “go dig ya partna up n**** I bet he can’t say s***.”
Gucci reposted it on social media on Tuesday, November 17th 2020, adding laughing emojis.
The meme can be understood and interpreted as a reference to Pookie’s death in 2005 and TMZ notes that Gucci has joked about the shooting in the past.
During the Verzuz match, Gucci mentioned Pookie saying “we smoking on Pookie Loc” tonight and many have reacted on Twitter.
Jeezy referenced Pookie in song lyrics
The Jeezy song ‘Forgive Me’ from 2015 includes the lyrics: “Rest in peace to Pookie Loc, blame it on me never snitching/Lord knows I ain’t send the homie on no dummy mission.”
Jenkins told Genius in 2015 that he wanted everybody to know that he didn’t send Pookie to rob Gucci:
“I never spoke on it and over the years it’s something that bothered me because I felt I was never able to explain the situation because that’s against the G-Code. I just wanted to put that in the air like, Lord knows I would never send homie on no dummy mission. I got too much love.”
How did Pookie Loc die
On May 10, 2005, Gucci was visiting a friend when four men broke into the house and assaulted him. Gucci grabbed his gun and shot back, hitting Pookie Loc, who was later found dead near a school in Decatur, Georgia. Gucci was eventually acquitted of the murder charge he was faced with— he maintained that he acted in self-defense.
Now, 10 years later, Jeezy is opening up about the whole thing. He wants the world to know that he did not send Loc to rob Gucci like people have alleged for the past decade.
“I never spoke on it and over the years it’s something that bothered me because I felt I was never able to explain the situation because that’s against the G-Code,” he dictated to Genius, in a comment meant to annotate the emotional song lyric. “I just wanted to put that in the air like, Lord knows I would never send homie on no dummy mission. I got too much love.”
