Nigeria Super Eagles coach Gernor Rohr has identified German-born goalkeeper Maduka Okoye as one of the players he would want to include in the current crop of players for the country’s senior National team.

Goalkeeper

Daniel Akpeyi who was number one in Egypt at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was largely criticized for his showing at the competition.

Okoye was invited to the U-23 side by Nigeria but could not make it due to club engagements.

However, Rohr has said Okoye who features for Fortuna Düsseldorf II and has expressed his desire to play for Nigeria, is one of the players he is looking forward to invite to the team.

“My aim is to improve all the departments in the team. The most important ones are the goalkeeper and then the goal scorer, they are already two challenges now, we’ve been working on it for a long time now,” Rohr told Sport Extra.

“We knew the problem in the goalkeeping department before the AFCON, and that it could be a big problem at the AFCON.

“So, the bronze medal is really an achievement and we could have even gotten to the final. When you go to the history of winners of AFCON, you must be good in this position, you must be very good and I think we can be.

“So, for the goalkeeper position, we have Maduka Okoye, who plays for Dusseldorf; he will be a good one (keeper), I think.”
