Veterans Day is observed on November 11th in the United States, commemorating the end of World War I in 1918.
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11th as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words:
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
THE HISTORY OF VETERANS DAY EXPLAINED
In 1938 Congress recognised Armistice Day as an official federal holiday.
Then, in 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honour the veterans of all wars the United States has fought. In France, the day is still known as Armistice Day.
The Uniform Holiday Act of 1968 moved the holiday from November 11th to the fourth Monday in October to ensure a long weekend for workers. However, in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned the holiday to its original November date.
Veterans Day is a federal holiday, a bank holiday, and in most states, it is also a state holiday. However, whether Veterans Day is taken as a work holiday by companies is a business decision.
