‘We are weeping in our hearts and souls, and we reject this socio-economic evil,’ said the Nigerian Students Association, which has threatened a nationwide strike over the proposed fuel price hike.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to go on strike in protest of the Federal Government’s plans to raise the petrol price in 2022.

'We are weeping in our hearts and souls, and we reject this socio-economic evil,' said the Nigerian Students Association, which has threatened a nationwide strike over the proposed fuel price hike.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPCGroup )’s Managing Director, Mele Kyari, announced this week that the fuel subsidy will be phased off in 2022, culminating in a fuel price of N340 per litre.

According to NANS, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other civil society organizations would join forces to stage a nationwide demonstration against the proposed fuel price hikes.

NANS President Sunday Asefon told the Federal Government in a statement on Friday, November 26 that Nigerians are already suffering and cannot afford to be burdened even more by a rise in gas prices.

“NANS is still attempting to make sense of this unusual proposition,” he said. We oppose and will resist this socioeconomic wicked idea on behalf of millions of Nigerian students, their parents, and other family members who are suffering.

“Nigerians are in excruciating pain. We are in a precarious socioeconomic situation. In our hearts and souls, we are weeping. We are dying quietly. Because we are directly connected, we feel the suffering and anguish. Any attempt to exacerbate the social and economic constraints we presently face and bear will be not just unconscionable, but also hazardous.

“It will equal to putting Nigerians’ patience to the limit.” And we want to warn you about it. The country is tense and stretched. In case the government is unaware, we are now providing them with this intelligence for free.

“Again, we advise the administration not to overextend itself.” The ramifications will be disastrous. The public are already enraged, and dishonesty will breed dishonesty.”

“Enough is enough.”

“We know that neoliberal and imperial economists will appear shortly to confuse themselves with outdated analysis and commentary.”

“While we hope that the Federal Government will take this patriotic advise to heart, we urge all of our comrades, allies, and NANS structures to be vigilant.” Nobody should be influenced or distracted in any manner. We will battle to break free from further social constraints because liberation comes through effort,” he stated.
