Former f(x) member Amber Liu has once again found herself being blamed by Twitter users for something she didn’t do. So, why do fans do this and where did it start? Let’s dive into it.
After Dispatch broke the news of Blackpink’s Jennie and G-Dragon’s relationship, Twitter fans were seeking for the culprit of the leak.
Soon enough, fans began pointing fingers to Amber Liu, leaving her to defend herself against the claims.
“Amber Liu personally took the pics of Jennie and G-Drago and sent them to dispatch herself,” tweeted one user.
“Y’all know who to blame,” posted another, to which Amber responded: “No.”
“False,” she tweeted to another user who claimed: “I know it was your fault.”
So, why does Twitter blame Amber Liu?
To clarify, Amber Liu did not leak the Jennie and G-Dragon story, instead it’s a running joke online, Those in the K-pop fandom will know that this isn’t the first time it’s happened.
“Normalize blaming everything on Amber Liu,” tweeted one user.
It’s commonplace on Twitter for K-pop fans to jokingly blame Amber Liu for completely unrelated events. Although it’s unclear exactly why or when this started, it’s likely pinned down to her previous comments on police brutality, which earned her a plethora of ‘haters’.
In 2019, Amber Liu commented on a viral video of a black man being handcuffed for eating a sandwich on a subway, dubbing it “deserved”. She later apologised for the comment, saying she jumped to conclusions and had educated herself on systemic racism.
She responded to the ‘blame joke’ before
Twitter’s joke of blaming Amber Liu hasn’t gone unnoticed either, and in January she addressed it directly.
“Periodically, I get a flood of ridiculous messages. I dont understand why people wanna keep blaming me for things totally unrelated to me. There is enough pain in the world rn, what good is it projecting more negativity? Leave me the f**k alone pls,” she wrote.
Although the joke clearly didn’t stop there, some fans have since come to her defence, asking people to stop blaming her.
